Help us share the stories of Charlotteans as we turn your reflections on the place we call home into a special piece of art, presented by Compass Group, called The Faces of Charlotte, to celebrate the City of Charlotte’s 250th anniversary.
From March 23-29, the team at Charlotte-based WonderWorld Creative will record videos of Charlotte residents answering these questions:
What is your favorite Charlotte story?
What do you love about Charlotte and why?
How can our city change for the better?
The intention is to tell Charlotte's story from the people's perspective: from those of us who live here every day and create this vibrant, challenging place we call home. We want to hear from a broad cross-section of our city—what folks love about it and how it can change. And most importantly, we want to hear one story: one event or adventure you had which speaks to the humanity of our city. Maybe it's an incident you witnessed, an experience you treasure or something you did for someone else.
The Faces of Charlotte video will be projected onto a 'screen' of cascading water at Polk Park in Uptown during Charlotte SHOUT!, a three-day festival celebrating the creative convergence of art, music, ideas and food, May 9-11. The water and the falls around it are reminiscent of the early Catawba river, which was not flat like we see it today, but rocky, chaotic, and full of energy. Each story will be 30- to 60 seconds long, featuring beauty shots of each person and her/his story told in real time with subtitles onscreen.
If you’re ready to add your voice to this community storytelling project, please select a day and time from the options listed. Interviews will be brief and will be conducted in the warehouse space behind Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art, 1520 S. Tryon St., in Historic South End. Parking is available at the gallery or along W. Summit Ave. The site is less than a five-minute walk from the Bland Street light rail station. Look for the signs to guide you into the warehouse space adjacent to the gallery. Come as you are – we can’t wait to hear your story!
